Tanuj Virwani turns writer, producer and director for his iPhone-shot thriller Naash, filmed at his Lonavala farmhouse

Actor Tanuj Virwani is stepping into a new creative space as he takes charge of writing, producing and directing his own series, Naash. What makes the project particularly intriguing is that the thriller has been shot on an iPhone, with several sequences filmed at Tanuj’s farmhouse in Lonavala, adding a personal and unconventional dimension to the filmmaking experience.

Written and directed by Tanuj himself, Naash reflects his desire to explore storytelling beyond the traditional boundaries of filmmaking. The project was shot across locations including Lonavala, Kerala and Hong Kong, bringing together different settings for a narrative rooted in suspense and thrills.

Talking about the experience, Tanuj shared, “Naash is a thriller, and the whole experience of making it has been extremely exciting and challenging for me. I wanted to experiment with the medium and see how far we could push ourselves creatively by shooting an entire film on an iPhone. A lot of it was shot at my farmhouse in Lonavala, and I also shot with my friends, which made the experience very personal. But shooting a thriller on a phone at night was genuinely very scary! When you’re working in the dark, trying to create the right atmosphere and capture the tension with limited resources, the entire experience becomes incredibly immersive. It was a different kind of filmmaking experience altogether.”

For Tanuj, wearing multiple hats on Naash has meant being involved in every stage of the creative process, from developing the script to translating his vision into a film. The decision to shoot on an iPhone also presents an interesting experiment in independent filmmaking.

With Lonavala providing a key backdrop for the project, alongside locations in Kerala and Hong Kong, Naash brings together a distinctive setting and a hands-on creative approach. The film marks an interesting step in Tanuj’s journey as he explores his abilities behind the camera while continuing his work as an actor.

By writing, producing and directing Naash, Tanuj Virwani is embracing a more personal approach to cinema, taking a story from the page to the screen on his own terms.
