Sobhana Mostary speaks after record-breaking knock against Australia in Brisbane
Sobhana Mostary scored 118 off 134 balls in the second women’s ODI against Australia in Brisbane on October 11 2026, becoming the first Bangladesh woman to score a century against Australia. The innings is also the highest individual score by a Bangladesh woman in women’s ODIs, surpassing Fargana Hoque’s 107 against India in 2023.
Mostary arrived at the crease with Bangladesh in serious difficulty at 8 for 3 in the eighth over. She went on to add 195 runs for the fourth wicket alongside captain Nigar Sultana, which is Bangladesh’s highest partnership for any wicket in women’s ODIs. Sultana remained unbeaten on 74 off 114 balls. Mostary was eventually bowled by Megan Schutt for 118, an innings that contained 18 fours. Bangladesh lost the match despite the record-breaking knock.
“I am so happy about my century. I batted against a world champion team. It is the first time one of us scored a hundred in Australia. I thought about my batting style after the way I got out in the first ODI. I just realised how I can bat deep. I thought about my process. I went out there and played to my strength,” Mostary said, as quoted by ESPN Australia.
Mostary reached her half-century off 66 balls. The century was her first in 107 international matches and made her the third Bangladesh batter to score an ODI century, after Fargana Hoque, who has two, and Nigar Sultana, who has one. Despite Mostary’s knock, Australia romped to a nine-wicket victory courtesy of Georgia Voll’s unbeaten 131, sealing the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.
What did Mostary say about her historic innings?
Mostary spoke about her mindset going into the match and the adjustments she made after the first ODI. She credited her captain’s encouragement and her own focus on process as key factors behind the knock, having walked in with Bangladesh already three wickets down inside the first eight overs.
“They were bowling really well. We planned to bat out the fifty overs in the first ODI too. We planned similarly today too. When I went out there, we had lost three wickets already. I managed to play the ball according to the merit, and play my own shots also. Then over to over we just executing our own strength,” she said.
How did the Mostary and Nigar Sultana partnership unfold?
The 195-run fourth-wicket stand between Mostary and Nigar Sultana was central to Bangladesh’s recovery from 8 for 3. Sultana’s unbeaten 74 off 114 balls provided steady support alongside Mostary’s century, and the partnership set a new Bangladesh women’s ODI record for any wicket. The stand underlined how the two batters managed the Australian attack over a sustained period, rotating strike and targeting the bad ball while respecting the good deliveries.
“Captain Joti [Sultana] told me to just stay out there, at least till the 40th over. Afterwards, we can maybe play our shots. We looked out for the bad ball, which we punished. We had to respect the good ball. Joti kept telling me that I am capable of scoring a century. Joti also played really well. She provided me with the support,” Mostary said.
