Jeet Raval retires from cricket ahead of 2026-27 season

Jeet Raval has announced his retirement from professional cricket ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season, bringing to a close a first-class career that began in December 2008 with a debut for Auckland against West Indies. The left-handed opener, who turned 38 in September 2026, made the announcement on October 9, 2026, with New Zealand Cricket confirming the news.

Raval played 24 Test matches for New Zealand between 2016 and 2020, making his Test debut in Christchurch on November 17, 2016, against Pakistan. Across those 24 Tests, he scored one century and seven half-centuries. He was also part of the New Zealand squad that won the inaugural World Test Championship in June 2021.

“It’s with a great honour and a privilege that I made this decision. I feel at peace and very content. The childhood dream [was] obviously to play for Black Caps and I look back with pride. It wasn’t just my dream, [but] also my father’s dream as well. We saw an opportunity and he moved the family here so I could have an opportunity to live my dream,” said Raval as quoted by Cricinfo.

Raval emigrated from Gujarat, India to Auckland in his teens. Before moving to New Zealand, he was Parthiv Patel’s opening partner at Vidyanagar School in Ahmedabad. During the latter stages of his career, he also practised as a chartered accountant for an auditing firm and served as assistant coach to Tarun Nethula with the Samoa team.

“It was one of the most successful times in our Test history when I was part of the team, and we had a great team and we had a lot of success along the way as well,” said Raval.

What did Jeet Raval achieve across his first-class career?

Raval opened the batting in 285 of his 292 first-class innings, accumulating 10,127 runs at an average of 37.36 with 23 centuries. In December 2025, while captaining Northern Districts, he became the 30th New Zealander to join the 10,000-run first-class club. His final competitive match was for Northern Districts against Central Districts in the Plunket Shield in March 2026.

In the Plunket Shield specifically, Raval scored 8,662 runs, placing him fourth on the all-time list behind Michael Papps (11,463), Matthew Sinclair (8,842) and Peter Fulton (8,719). Across 96 List A games, he scored 2,714 runs at an average of 30.15. In T20 cricket, he finished with 1,484 runs at an average of 21.50 and a strike rate of 121.44.

Raval also captained Northern Districts to their first Plunket Shield title in more than a decade during the 2024-25 season. During that title-winning campaign, he claimed 14 wickets at an average of 11.14, including a maiden five-wicket haul.

“It was one of the most successful times in our Test history when I was part of the team, and we had a great team and we had a lot of success along the way as well. I really enjoyed contributing to the team. Early in my career, I hadn’t got a hundred, but I was still getting the starts and helping the team build that foundation,” said Raval

“I think I had a couple of games where I didn’t quite perform where I was required to perform. And then, unfortunately, they [team management] decided to go another way… I was disappointed, but also happy that somebody else did the job that the team needed at the time,” he added.

How did Northern Districts respond to Raval’s retirement?

Northern Districts paid tribute to Raval’s contribution as both a player and a leader at the franchise.

“From an ND perspective, Jeet has been the ultimate senior pro and leader since joining us. His runs (and wickets!) and calm leadership will be missed. More than anything, though, Jeet is a great man. Respected, loyal, and an outstanding team-mate that has always given his best,” the team’s general manager of cricket Ian Sandbrook said.

Raval’s departure leaves Northern Districts without one of their most experienced first-class cricketers ahead of the 2026-27 domestic season. No successor to his captaincy role has been confirmed at the time of this report.
