Bhuvneshwar recall means Shami’s door open: Ashwin
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been recalled to India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand beginning October 24. The pacer last played for India in a T20I in New Zealand in November 2022, marking a gap of nearly four years since his previous international appearance. His selection comes after a strong showing in the Indian Premier League, where he took 28 wickets during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s successful title defence in IPL 2026.
Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the selection decision, offering perspective on what Bhuvneshwar’s return means for other players seeking a route back into the squad. Speaking on his show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin highlighted the shift in selection philosophy and its implications for players currently outside the frame.
“The chairman of selectors is set to be changed. Ajit Agarkar is no longer a part of the setup. Maybe Ajit focused more on youngsters and newcomers. But now you see, without Bumrah, India’s bowling attack can be a little susceptible,” Ashwin said in the above mentioned source.
“The BCCI is now leaning towards experience. The fact that they have picked Bhuvneshwar (Kumar), I wouldn’t say that the door is shut on (Mohammed) Shami either. But I am extremely happy that Bhuvneshwar has broken down the door for his selection,” he added.
Bhuvneshwar’s T20I record and India’s squad for New Zealand
Bhuvneshwar’s career statistics in T20I cricket underline his experience at the format. He has played 87 T20Is for India, taking 90 wickets at an average of 23.10 with an economy rate of 6.96. His return to the squad comes as Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the series. Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of the 16-member squad announced on October 6.
Mohammed Shami’s absence from recent squads has been a point of discussion following his last appearance for India in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025. Shami has since missed subsequent action due to injury and has not made a successful comeback despite domestic and IPL performances. His career record includes 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20Is, in which he has taken 229, 206 and 27 wickets respectively.
