Religious leaders and seers should speak responsibly and work to protect peace, equality and harmony in society, said Arjun Bhadre, State convener, Karnataka State Dalit Sangharsha Samiti State.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Bhadre said the samiti strongly condemned the alleged remarks made by Shivakumar Swami of Chidambara Ashram in Bidar district at the Basavadi Sharanara Hindu Samavesha held in the city on September 27.
He said religious leaders should be careful while speaking about caste and religion and should ensure that their words do not hurt the sentiments of any community. Statements that go against Basaveshwara’s message of equality and humanity could create confusion and disturb social harmony, Mr. Bhadre said.
Mr. Bhadre said caste discrimination and untouchability had existed in Indian society for centuries and that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had fought against such social injustice.
“Basaveshwara’s teachings emphasise equality, Kayaka, Dasoha and social justice. His name should not be used for discussions that divide people based on caste or religion. There is a need to understand and follow Basaveshwara’s ideas in today’s society,” Mr. Bhadre said.
Referring to a statement attributed to Adrushya Kadasiddeshwara Swami of Kaneri Mutt that there were more churches than Mutts in Bidar district, Mr. Bhadre said there should also be a discussion about Buddha viharas in different parts of the country and the historical background of Buddhism.
He urged religious and social leaders to work towards maintaining peace, mutual respect and harmony in society.
