Bangladesh T20 World Cup withdrawal: interim govt blamed

Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the T20 World Cup co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, 2026 has been attributed to the interim government by a three-member inquiry committee. The Ministry of Youth and Sports formed the panel to investigate the circumstances surrounding the nation’s non-participation in the tournament.

The committee, headed by Dr AKM Wali Ullah (Additional Secretary, Administration) and including former national captain Habibul Bashar and Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dastagir, submitted its findings after examining the sequence of events that led to the withdrawal.

Barrister Faisal Dastagir, a member of the probe committee, identified the interim government as bearing responsibility for Bangladesh’s absence from the World Cup. Dr Asif Nazrul, who served as sports adviser in the interim government formed after the student-led uprising in August 2024, was named as the person directly responsible for the decision.

Probe committee identifies interim government responsibility

The committee’s 22-page report, released on September 15, 2026, detailed the factors that contributed to the withdrawal and assessed their relative impact on the outcome.

“Based on media reports and after talking to experts, we came to the conclusion that the person responsible was Dr Asif Nazrul, who was in the government at the time, and that the government was responsible,” Barrister Faisal Dastagir told reporters at the NSC conference room today.

The committee identified multiple factors contributing to the withdrawal and ranked their impact levels. Political tensions between India and Bangladesh, combined with the ICC’s refusal to shift the venue, were assessed as having “very high” impact on the outcome. The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s failure in negotiations with the ICC was rated as having “high” impact, while communication breakdown between stakeholders was classified as having “medium” impact.

The BCB had withdrawn from the tournament citing safety concerns after the interim government directed the withdrawal when the ICC rejected the request to relocate matches to Sri Lanka.

Impact on players and recommendations for the future

The probe committee concluded that players and fans suffered most from Bangladesh’s absence from the World Cup. The committee recommended that cricket be kept separate from political disputes, that the BCB’s independence be strengthened, and that crisis communication protocols be improved.

Additional recommendations included prioritising players’ welfare and security and creating a national sports diplomacy framework to prevent similar situations in the future. Scotland replaced Bangladesh in the tournament following the withdrawal.

The new government’s sports minister Aminul Haque expressed a desire to repair Bangladesh’s sporting relationship with India and sought a proper investigation into how the T20 World Cup situation was handled by the BCB and the previous government.
