Fleming joins England T20I squad to prepare for Test head coach role

Stephen Fleming arrived in the United Kingdom on Monday, September 14, 2026, for a roughly two-week visit aimed at establishing himself within the England cricket set-up ahead of his tenure as Test head coach. Fleming, who was appointed to the role in July 2026 as the successor to Brendon McCullum, missed England’s 3-0 series win over Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick covering as interim Test coach during that period.

As part of his trip, Fleming will join England‘s T20I squad in Manchester, where he will shadow McCullum over the weekend for the third T20I of the home series against Sri Lanka. England play three T20Is against Sri Lanka beginning September 15, 2026, with Harry Brook captaining the side in the limited-overs format. Brook also holds the position of Test vice-captain.

As reported by Cricinfo, Fleming will also use the visit to catch up with Joe Root this week, with the pair set to review the Pakistan series and begin planning for England’s Test tour of South Africa, which begins with a tour match in Durban on December 9, 2026.

What will Fleming do during his time in England?

Beyond the T20I fixture in Manchester, Fleming is using the trip to travel across the country and connect with players and staff at county level as well as at Loughborough. The visit is designed to help him settle into his new role before his first assignment as Test head coach. McCullum, who is both England’s limited-overs coach and Fleming’s business partner, will be a key point of contact during the trip.

“He was on the M1 this morning. He was driving around the country making sure he catches up with a few people around the county scene and down at Loughbrough as well and getting around trying to get his feet under the desk. He’ll do that pretty quickly and join up with us in Manchester and we’ll have a good chance to work through a few things,” McCullum said, speaking to Cricinfo, ahead of England’s first T20I against Sri Lanka.

Fleming is also scheduled to commentate for Sky on India’s tour of New Zealand after returning home, meaning his window in England is limited to approximately two weeks. Following his return, England’s next major commitment on the Test calendar is the South Africa tour, with a three-Test series to follow the Durban tour match in December 2026.

The appointment of Fleming as Test head coach alongside McCullum’s continued role in limited-overs cricket creates a split coaching structure for England. Six of the XI from the third Edgbaston Test, including Brook, travelled to Southampton less than 24 hours after that match concluded, illustrating the demands placed on players who feature across formats. “The coaching structure with Flem coming in, split coaches, means we need more resources now, not less resource. So we’re going to have to work through that for the next little while. Flem and I will catch up in the coming days and we’ll start trying to piece all that together,” McCullum said.
