Varun Chakravarthy ruled out of India vs Afghanistan T20I series

Varun Chakravarthy has been ruled out of the remainder of the India vs Afghanistan T20I series after the first match on September 13. The spinner will not be available for the second T20I on September 15 or the third on September 17.

The first T20I was played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where India won by seven wickets. Chakravarthy bowled four overs in that match and returned figures of 1 wicket for 16 runs before he was ruled out of the series.

As reported by Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not issued an official statement on the exact nature or reasons behind Chakravarthy’s absence from the series.

What is known about Chakravarthy’s injury history?

This is not the first time Chakravarthy has been sidelined in recent months. During IPL 2026, he sustained a foot injury while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders. He then picked up a hamstring injury during the England T20I series in July 2026 and was ruled out after the third match of that series, following which he underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE).

His injury during the England series also caused him to miss the subsequent Ireland T20I series, as he continued his recovery at the BCCI facility. The latest setback during the Afghanistan series marks another interruption to what has been a difficult run of fitness for the spinner across multiple formats and assignments in 2026. With the upcoming Asian Gmaes also in the horizon, India have been dealt a major setback with their lead spinner’s absence.

Who are India’s spin options for the remaining two T20Is?

With Chakravarthy unavailable, India have spin bowling alternatives within the squad for the second and third T20Is. Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi are both available and are expected to share the spin-bowling responsibilities across the remaining two matches against Afghanistan.

The second T20I is scheduled for September 15, 2026, followed by the third and final match on September 17, 2026. India lead the series after their seven-wicket victory in Delhi and will look to their available spinners to maintain that advantage over the remaining fixtures.
