BJP demands Rahul Gandhi apologise for remarks on economy

The BJP demanded an apology from Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday (September 1, 2026) for his criticism of the state of the Indian economy. Party leaders cited the 7.8% GDP growth figure recorded in the April-June quarter as evidence of the economy’s resilience under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Addressing a press conference, senior BJP MP and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad credited Mr. Modi’s leadership and the government’s economic policies for the growth, while also lauding Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the contribution of Indian industry, businesses, and workers.

Mr. Prasad said the latest figures had “exposed” what he described as the “false and baseless” narrative being pushed by the Congress. He said Mr. Gandhi should apologise for his “dead economy” remark, which was based on “falsehood and baseless allegations.”
