TMC alleges attacks on party workers; asks why President’s rule should not be imposed in West Bengal

Alleging that party workers at the grassroots level in various parts of West Bengal are facing brutal attacks, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Thursday (August 27, 2026) claimed that law and order has collapsed and asked why President’s rule should not be imposed in the State.

TMC spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien, while drawing attention to a video posted by the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on social media, alleged that a brutal attack was perpetrated on Gyananand Samanta, the party’s Bishnupur block president, by unidentified miscreants in the presence of police earlier this week.

PTI could not independently verify the authenticity of the video, which showed a visibly injured and distraught person being assaulted and subsequently being dragged away by the police.

“These are clear indications that police atrocities are continuously being unleashed on our workers alongside political atrocities across the State,” Mr. O’Brien alleged.

“Law and order in the State has collapsed. Aren’t these circumstances that call for President’s rule in Bengal? If this happened in any non-BJP State, President’s rule would surely have been imposed by now,” he added.

So far, there has been no statement from the West Bengal police in connection with the incident. The Suvendu Adhikari-led BJP government was formed in the State by dislodging Mamata Banerjee’s TMC.

The BJP won 207 of the 294 seats in the Assembly elections, the results of which were declared on May 4 this year.
