SC youth’s death: CB-CID names six police officers as accused

The CB-CID charge sheet filed in the Scheduled Caste youth Akash Delison’s custodial death case revealed that a murder case has been registered against six policemen, including a police inspector.

Delison, from Krishnarajapuram near Manamadurai in Sivaganga district, was arrested on March 5, 2026 in connection with a case in which two people were hacked during a dispute in Manamadurai. Delison was admitted to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital with injuries, but he died at the hospital.

The police had claimed that he was injured after falling from a bridge while trying to escape arrest, and that he died despite treatment after being admitted to the hospital.

However, alleging that Akash died due to police assault, his relatives staged continuous protests. Further, an autopsy revealed injuries at 28 places.

Police Inspector Dileepan and five other policemen were placed under suspension in connection to the death of the youth.

Subsequently, CB-CID police had been investigating the case under murder and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, charges.

Meanwhile, the CB-CID police filed a chargesheet in the Madurai court on June 18. A copy of that chargesheet has now been received by Akash Delison’s family.

The document stated that the police took Akash to a eucalyptus grove near Manamadurai and assaulted him with an iron rod. He suffered a fracture on his right leg below the knee and above the ankle. Consequently, Akash Delison died due to a fat embolism in his blood vessels, it claimed.

‘Police hid rod used in assault’

Additionally, the chargesheet stated that the police hid the iron rod used in the assault and falsely recorded that he sustained injuries after falling while trying to escape from the police.

Six individuals — Inspector Dileepan, Sub-Inspector Guhan, and constables Kaleeswaran, Mahendran, Deiventiran, and Palaniappan — have been included as accused in this case.

‘Premeditated intent’

Akash Delison’s family alleged that the copy of the chargesheet was provided 68 days after it was filed, that it contained only 12 pages, and that all the documents recorded during the investigation were not fully provided.

The document added that the six police personnel had acted with premeditated intent, fully conscious of the victim’s caste.
