Birth centenary celebrations of Babu Rao Varma

The birth centenary celebrations of freedom fighter and former public servant B. Babu Rao Varma will commence at Gandhi Centenary Hall, Exhibition Grounds, Nampally, on Wednesday. The year-long celebrations will continue until August 26, 2027.

Varma, a prominent participant in the Hyderabad State freedom movement, served in several key positions, including member of the National Commission for Backward Classes, Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission and Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Commission. He also served as director of the Backward Classes Welfare Department and managing director of the AP Backward Classes Finance Corporation.

He participated in Acharya Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan Padayatra in 1951. His work also contributed to policy initiatives for the socio-economic empowerment of backward classes at the national level.

Minister for BC Welfare and Transport Ponnam Prabhakar, former governor Bandaru Dattatreya, adviser to the government K. Keshava Rao, Minister for IT and Industries D. Sridhar Babu, chairman of IIT-Hyderabad Society N. Divakar, adviser to the government V. Hanumantha Rao, BC Commission chairman Niranjan, retired OGH superintendent Gopal Krishna and retired IAS officer K.V. Ramanachary are likely to attend the programme.
