Tamil film industry faces release halt from September 1 over 8-week OTT window dispute

The Tamil film industry is facing a potential disruption in theatrical releases from September 1, 2026, amid an ongoing disagreement between film producers and theatre owners over the minimum theatrical window before films can be released on OTT platforms.

Tamil film industry faces release halt from September 1 over 8-week OTT window dispute

The Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Nadu Active Film Producers Council have taken a firm stand on the issue. According to the latest development, no new Tamil films will be allowed to release in theatres in Tamil Nadu from September 1 if the dispute remains unresolved.

At the centre of the disagreement is the demand from Tamil Nadu theatrical owners and distributors that Tamil films should not be released on OTT platforms until at least eight weeks after their theatrical release. Theatre owners and distributors are understood to be seeking the longer window to protect theatrical revenues and give films sufficient time to perform at the box office.

However, the producers’ council has not agreed to the eight-week OTT condition, leading to an escalation in the standoff between the two sides. The disagreement could affect several Tamil films that are scheduled for theatrical release from September onwards.

As part of the proposed protest, the producers’ bodies are also considering stopping shooting and post-production work on Tamil films to register their opposition to the condition. If implemented, such a move could affect films that are currently in production as well as projects nearing completion.

The issue has also been brought to the attention of Tamil Nadu’s Film Minister and the Chief Minister of the state, with the industry seeking intervention in what has become a significant dispute between producers, distributors and theatre owners.

The release halt could have a wider impact on the Tamil film industry’s release calendar and business if the two sides fail to reach an agreement. With September 1 approaching, discussions over the OTT window are expected to remain a key focus for the industry as stakeholders look for a resolution.
