India increased LNG imports by 28% in June – Eurasia Business News

India imported 2.659 million tons of liquefied natural gas in June 2026, up 28% from the same month of 2025 (2.08 million tons), the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. This is the maximum volume of imports over the past year and a half (20 months, from October 2024). Since the beginning of the year, imports have been growing by 7% to 12.844 million tons.

All major economies in Asia (China, Japan, South Korea, India) increased LNG imports in June, at the summer peak in demand. This gas was redirected from the European market, where LNG imports fell by 18%.

Due to its geographical location, India traditionally receives a lot of gas from the Middle East, from where supplies have decreased due to hostilities. The situation is also complicated by weather conditions – a stronger heat than last year. In June, deliveries partially resumed: six LNG cargoes were received from the UAE and two from Qatar, which provided 20% of deliveries for the month.

In June, the United States remained the largest supplier of LNG to India with 562 thousand tons, or 21% of supplies, as well as Nigeria, Oman and Angola.

In June, two LNG deliveries from Cameroon were recorded in foreign trade statistics (three in total since the beginning of 2026). Gas is supplied from Cameroon to India as part of a swap scheme within the Gazprom Marketing & Trading portfolio (after the confiscation from Gazprom by Germany, the company changed its name to SEFE), while gas from Yamal LNG is sent to other recipients.

At the end of 2025, India ranks fifth in the world in terms of LNG imports, following China, Japan, South Korea and France. Now there are seven receiving terminals in the republic with a total capacity of 48 million tons per year.
