Brain fitness: The next frontier after wellness apps?
MUMBAI: Somewhere between a sleep mask and a neuroscience lab, an American device that claims to compress a four-hour night’s rest into 20 minutes is about to make its Indian debut, with a member of the Chettinad royal family as its local face. BrainTap USA is set to launch in India on Saturday at the two-day Longevity Summit India in Mumbai, where “mental mastery” shares the main stage with talk of gut microbiomes, peptides and cardiac coherence. The launch follows an MoU between BrainTap Technology in the US and BrainTap India, an initiative of the Royal Family of Chettinad, to bring the full BrainTap ecosystem, app, headset and a measuring device, into the country.BrainTap is built on a decades-old idea called brain entrainment: the theory that rhythmic external stimuli, light flickering at a set frequency, tones pulsing in each ear, can gently pull the brain’s own electrical activity into step with them, the way a metronome pulls a wandering musician back on beat. The headset, developed over four decades by its founder, US neuroscientist Patrick Porter, delivers pulsed LED light through closed eyelids alongside binaural beats, isochronic tones and guided audio through a companion app. The idea is to shift users out of the anxious, overstimulated “beta” state most people live in and toward calmer alpha and theta brainwaves, the frequencies associated with relaxation, sleep onset and creative thinking. “When your eyes are closed, there’s something called photobiomodulation,” Porter said, explaining that light hitting the eyelids creates a flickering effect he calls a “frequency following response.” It’s the same basic principle, he says, that popularised binaural beats decades ago, except paired here with light and delivered through a closed, monitored loop rather than an open audio file on the internet.That loop is worth pausing on, because it maps onto a broader arc that wellness technology has followed over the past decade. The first generation of consumer wellness devices, the Fitbits, the early smartwatches, did one thing: they measured. Steps, heart rate, sleep duration, sometimes blood oxygen. The assumption was that visibility alone would nudge behaviour. A second generation went the other way and skipped measurement altogether, going straight to intervention: meditation apps, white-noise machines, weighted blankets, sleep headbands that simply played a programme regardless of who was wearing it or what state they were in. The frontier now being chased by companies like Whoop, Oura and a clutch of neurotech start-ups is a third stage, a closed loop that measures a person’s baseline, uses that data to select or tailor an intervention, and then measures again to see whether it worked, in theory letting the system keep adjusting itself over time. BrainTap, as it stands today, sits closer to that third category than most competitors selling in India, but with an important caveat. While the company positions its NeuroChek Go device and AI layer as reading a user’s state and recommending which of its library of sessions to use, the underlying sessions themselves don’t dynamically change based on what the device measures. The protocol is, in Porter’s own words, “already hardwired.” The system points a user toward a different pre-built session based on the parameters measured before the intervention.Annamalai Chettiar, whose family is bringing the ecosystem to India, framed the appeal in more personal terms. “The most important aspect of longevity is the mind,” he said. “If you can transform the mind, you’ve taken the first and most basic step. I slept barely five hours last night, yet after 25 minutes on this, I’m as fresh as if I’d had a full night. That’s how fascinating these protocols are.” His family’s involvement, he said, grew out of years spent researching wellness technologies before settling on BrainTap as, in his words, among the best available in a crowded field.In India, the product will be sold in three tiers: the app alone, the app bundled with the headset, and a top tier that adds NeuroChek Go, a thumb-held sensor that takes roughly five minutes to read what the company describes as seven neurological parameters, including “brain voltage” and a biological-age estimate benchmarked against a database of some 40,000 prior users. That data, along with anything pulled in from a connected wearable such as an Oura ring or Whoop strap, feeds a recommendation engine trained on Porter’s own accumulated body of guidance, which then suggests which of the company’s roughly 3,000 audio-visual sessions, spanning sleep, focus, sports recovery, women’s health and other categories, a user should try next.On launch day at the summit (thelongevitysummitindia.com) the app, headset and a one-year subscription will be offered at a discounted price. Another option, a three-month subscription at a much lower cost is also on offer, users should notice improved sleep within that window, the company said. A rental model, hiring the device for a few months through the institute rather than buying outright, is also being planned, alongside a two-day experiential seminar this weekend where visitors can try the headset before deciding.Porter’s pitch leans heavily on reframing sleep itself. “People mistake hours in bed for sleep,” he said. “Sleep is a sport, we need to train for it, we need to think about it. It’s not something to be avoided.” He argues the real neurological requirement isn’t total hours but architecture: roughly one hour of deep sleep to clear the brain’s waste-clearing lymphatic system, and two hours of REM sleep to consolidate memory and process the day, benchmarks he says most people, sleeping in fragmented, poorly timed cycles, never actually hit regardless of how long they’re in bed. He points to earlier work with professional athletes, including what he describes as a long-standing relationship with NFL quarterback Tom Brady, and to an in-house, unpublished, study with a Major League Soccer team’s training staff, which he says found that 20 minutes on the device could approximate four hours of physical recovery. “We have 4,000 clinics using it in the US right now,” he said, citing what BrainTap says is a library of 72 published studies conducted on the device across sleep, cognition, stroke and mood-related outcomes.That evidence base is more substantial than what most consumer wellness gadgets can point to, though it varies quite a bit in rigour. A pilot at AIIMS Bhopal recorded measurable rises in gamma, beta and alpha brainwave power, along with improved heart-rate variability, after single BrainTap sessions in healthy young adults and medical students. A separate 12-week trial using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index found meaningful improvements in subjective sleep quality and global sleep scores among a small group of 19 adults, though not every sub-measure, sleep duration among them, shifted significantly. A Brazilian study on day-shift workers with chronic insomnia reported similar gains in sleep latency and total sleep time using an open-loop version of the device. Separately, a 100-volunteer trial conducted through Porter’s own Integrative Wellbeing Institute found that a single 20-minute session raised HRV markers by over 20% and cut a measured stress index by 38%, a genuine and reproducible physiological signature of relaxation, though that particular study hasn’t been peer-reviewed or published in an indexed journal. Dr. Aruna Viswanathan, chancellor, R.A.R.E Lifecare, who also heads the BrainTap India initiative, cites a personal use-case. She said she can see the effect on her 90-year old mother who has been using BrainTap for six months now. “Her sleep quality has improved greatly, she sleeps more deeply now,” said Dr Viswanathan.The clinical backbone of the India rollout comes from Dr Jamuna Rajeswaran, former head of clinical psychology at NIMHANS, who has run a neurofeedback practice there since 2007, treating over 5,000 patients, and publishing peer-reviewed work applying a modified, sound-only version of the protocol to stroke rehabilitation, after an institutional ethics committee flagged the light component as carrying a small seizure risk in a photosensitive minority. She has since extended the work, on a smaller and still-unpublished scale, to adult ADHD and clinical depression, and is now beginning a pilot with autistic children. “We’ve submitted a proposal to Ramachandra University last month for a certification programme,” she said. “We’re looking at psychologists and social workers, people who already understand the brain, and building the training from the anatomy up.”For now, though, what launches in India on Saturday is positioned strictly as a wellness product rather than a medical device, with sleep as its lead consumer use case and the clinical, certification-gated version running as a separate, slower track alongside it. Whether a technology four decades in the making, now repackaged with a thumb sensor and an AI recommendation layer, delivers on its more ambitious claims will likely depend on the kind of independently verified, India-specific research that, by its own backers’ admission, is still a work in progress.
