Gurnoor Brar tipped for India Test debut in Sri Lanka series 2026

India‘s two-Test series against Sri Lanka will begin at Galle with a significantly weakened pace attack after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana. Washington Sundar and Sai Sudharsan are similarly unavailable for the contest, leaving captain Shubman Gill to work with a reshuffled group.

The cluster of absentees has brought 26-year-old Punjab speedster Gurnoor Brar into serious contention for a first Test cap. Former Sri Lanka pacer Farveez Maharoof has come out in support of Brar, describing him as a potential X-factor for Gill’s side in these conditions.

“I really like Gurnoor Brar. I think he can be the X-factor. He has the bounce, the pace and the fighting spirit. He can be nasty,” Maharoof said, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

What has Gurnoor Brar done to earn a Test call-up?

Brar’s credentials for a Test debut are built on a productive recent stretch. During India A’s tour of Sri Lanka last month, he picked up a 10-wicket haul, showing he can perform in the very conditions the senior side will encounter at Galle. He has also claimed 11 wickets across six ODI appearances for India, giving him senior international experience even if it has so far been confined to white-ball cricket.

“If you watched the warm-up game, some of the deliveries he bowled to batters who are in the Test squad made them quite uneasy, and he even hit a couple of players on the body. If I were in the Indian think tank, I would be tempted to give Gurnoor a go. I know he has only played white-ball cricket for India, but he brings that X-factor. In short, burst spells, when you want to break a batter’s rhythm, he can be a lethal weapon,” Maharoof added.

Among the pace options available, Brar is currently placed ahead of Prasidh Krishna in the selection conversation. Mohammed Siraj is set to lead the attack, with the second seam berth still open for confirmation.

How does Bumrah’s absence shape India’s bowling challenge?

Of all the players unavailable, Maharoof believes Bumrah‘s absence carries the greatest weight for India’s bowling plans. Galle’s pitch can reward seamers who generate reverse swing with the older ball, a skill Bumrah has consistently delivered at the international level.

“The ability to reverse-swing the ball, especially with the older ball, is something Bumrah brings, and that is going to be a massive miss for India. That is where I think they could lack some wicket-taking ability. Mohammed Siraj is a good bowler, with all due respect to him, but when you compare the two fast bowlers, there is a bit of a difference,” Maharoof added.

The series carries significant weight in the context of the World Test Championship cycle. India’s qualification for the final depends on a strong run through their remaining fixtures, making both Tests in Sri Lanka important to their overall standing.
