Ashneer Grover critiques enormous fees of Bollywood actors; says, “I think all the superstars are overvalued”
Ashneer Grover, the entrepreneur and former Shark Tank India judge, has stirred controversy by targeting Bollywood’s highest-paid actors, labelling them “overvalued” for demanding astronomical fees despite their films sometimes underperforming at the box office.
In a candid interview with Bollywood Bubble, Grover drew a parallel between the valuation of film stars and startup founders, suggesting that actors should substantiate their stardom through equity stakes rather than relying on massive salaries that can soar into hundreds of crores. His remarks highlight the growing debate over compensation in the film industry and the balance between talent and financial accountability.
Grover remarked, “I get surprised when people say this superstar is charging Rs 40 crores, that one is charging Rs 50–80–100 crores, and the film made Rs 20 crores. What do they think they are doing? You should have faith in your own stardom and say that when my film makes money, I will make money.” He further emphasized that actors should consider taking equity in films instead of fixed fees, aligning their earnings with the film’s success.
Drawing a parallel between film stars and startup founders, Grover stated, “I think all the superstars are overvalued in the sense that if you think that the film is working because of you, then why are you charging a fee? You should have equity, right?”
Grover, who is presently hosting Rise and Fall, a web reality show on Amazon MX Player, reflected on his experience of filming the first season of Shark Tank India. He noted how he quickly became a viral sensation, thanks in large part to his witty one-liners.
He said, “The shoot stretched over a long weekend, with 12-hour days. Then you start realising, ki boss, this is about conserving your energy. So, I just decided to stick to one-liners instead of narrating stories. And somehow those lines were getting picked up.”
He further shared that the widespread popularity of his quotes was unexpected. “Honestly, I never imagined it would blow up this much. It was a surprise for me too—but definitely a pleasant one.”
Grover also spoke about the viral memes and social media chatter around his persona. He said, “Ya, I have seen those a lot. What to do now? Sometimes it’s just the timing of it, which is right. We have a viral meme culture and people found something refreshing coming out of a business person on TV. So ya, it just worked. You can’t overanalyse it.”
